UCLA Earns Series Sweep of USC, 13-­0

LOS ANGELES – Michael Toglia drove in six runs, including a three ­run home run, while Jon Olsen tossed 5.0 shutout innings as the UCLA baseball team earned the series sweep over crosstown rival USC, 13­0, on Saturday from Dedeaux Field. The Bruins earned their second conference series sweep this season. The Bruins broke the game open in the top of the second inning as they scored four runs to make the score 6­0. Jack Stronach stole home after Brett Stephens was caught in a run down with runners on first and third for the first run of the frame. A Trojan throwing error brought home Stephens and then a fly ball off the bat of Toglia was lost in the lights in center field for a two ­run double. UCLA put up five more runs in the sixth inning to make the score 12­0. Sean Bouchard hit a single through the left side to plate Stephens followed by Toglia smashing a three ­run home run to left field. The Bruins capped off the inning with a Ryan Kreidler RBI­ double down the left field line to bring home Jeremy Ydens from first base. The Bruins got on the scoreboard quickly with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning as Stephens scored on a USC wild pitch followed by Toglia ripping a double down the right­ field line to plate Daniel Amaral. Jon Olsen (4­1) earned the win tossing 5.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits and collecting seven strikeouts. UCLA's pitching staff earned its second shutout of the weekend against the Trojans. USC's Marrick Crouse (2­7) suffered the loss allowing six runs, two earned, in 1.2 innings of work. UCLA (24­20, 13­8) scored 13 runs on 17 hits with no errors, while USC (19­25, 6­15) recorded five hits and committed two errors. The Bruins continue their seven­ game road swing on Tuesday when they travel to No. 14 Cal State Fullerton for a midweek contest starting at 6 p.m. (PT). Game Notes: The Bruins offense scored double ­digit runs for the fourth time this season … Michael Toglia set a career high with six RBIs … The six RBIs are the second­most by a Bruin this season … Toglia recorded his sixth home run of the season … All three of Toglia's hits were for extra bases … Toglia, Brett Stephens and Daniel Amaral each recorded three hits … Jon Olsen's seven strikeouts are the second­ most of his career … The UCLA pitching staff picked up its fifth shutout of the season.
