4 run late rally pushes UCLA over Baylor

LOS ANGELES – Michael Toglia collected three hits, drove in two runs and scored once, while Chase Strumpf also recorded two RBIs as the No. 12 UCLA baseball team used a four-run eighth inning to defeat Baylor, 5-2, in the series opener on Friday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.


Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Jake Hirabayashi and Ryan Kreidler drew consecutive walks to begin the rally. They each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Will McInerny and the Bruins then loaded the bases when Daniel Amaral was hit by a pitch. After Baylor pitcher Collin Sharp recorded a strikeout, Toglia came up to the plate and drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2. Kyle Cuellar then earned another bases-loaded walk on six pitches to give UCLA a one-run advantage.

Strumpf sealed the win for the Bruins one batter later when he ripped a two-run single to left field to bring home Amaral and Toglia for the final score of 5-2.

Brian Gadsby (2-0) earned the win after tossing one scoreless inning in relief, while Holden Powell threw a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to collect the first save of the season.

UCLA starter Jake Bird threw 5.2 innings allowing two unearned runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Baylor's Cody Bradford tossed 5.0 shutout innings surrendering four hits and four walks but struck out seven batters.

After five scoreless innings to begin the game, Baylor opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth. The first run came around to score on a Bruin fielding error, followed by Josh Bissonette singling to right field to bring home Cole Haring.

UCLA responded in the bottom of the seventh inning with a RBI-double down the left-field line by Toglia to plate Jeremy Ydens from second to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Bruin bullpen of Nick Scheidler, Gadsby and Powell combined for 3.1 shutout innings allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.

UCLA (5-0) finished with five runs on eight hits with one error, while Baylor (2-2) ended the game with two runs on seven hits with no errors.

UCLA and Baylor will play game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
