"LOS ANGELESLars Nootbaar hit the game-winning homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the USC baseball team to a 3-2 victory over No. 11 UCLA at Dodger Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Trojans and Bruins played a back and forth contest to close the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic, with USC moving to 9-4 thanks to the win and UCLA falling to 10-4.

USC fell behind early after a sacrifice fly in the third, but Dillon Paulson homered in the bottom of the fourth to even things up. The Bruins went back up with a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning, but the Trojans again had an answer as Blake Sabol tripled and then scored on a grounder to first in the seventh. Nootbaar would provide the final heroics in the bottom of the eighth, sending a line drive over the right field fence.

Connor Lunn picked up the win after entering in the top of the eighth to get a big strikeout and strand two runners. Lunn again stranded two runners in the ninth to finish things off.

  • Nootbaar went 2-for-4 with his second homer of the season.
  • Paulson was 1-for-3 with a homer and walk.
  • Sabol was 1-for-3 with a triple and the game-tying run scored.
  • Lunn tossed 1.1 innings, striking out two and walking none to get the win.
  • Brian Gursky threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Head Coach Dan Hubbs on the experience at Dodger Stadium…
"I think it's great for college baseball in Southern California and great for amateur baseball, to see the competition here and have around 10,000 people come and watch the game. Anything we can do to promote that is great. And for these kids to get an opportunity to play in a major league stadium, especially most of our roster and most of UCLA's roster is Southern California kids who grew up rooting for the Angels or the Dodgers, I think there's nothing like it."

On the win…
"This was a big win for us over a good team and our crosstown rival. It's also a great RPI boost for us."

Nootbaar on the big home run…
"I was just looking for my pitch, and it ended being a slider up that I saw pretty well and decided to take a pass at it."
The Trojans head to LMU on Tuesday and then open up Pac-12 play at home against Utah with a three-game series starting on Thursday."
