The two are unrelated

I've been watching this show for 60 years.  Basketball draws when it has success several years in a row, regardless of how the football program is doing.  There is, and never will be, a fan base of more than 1500 that shows up consistently during losing seasons.

The problem is that the BB program has never gotten to the point of sustained success.  In the 60s and 70s, Boyd's teams were very good and would have been regular tournament under today's rules.  But then, only the conference champ could go to the tournament.  Raveling got the program going in the early 90s, then Miner left early, then Raveling had his car accident, start over.  Tim Floyd got the closest:  3 straight NCAA appearances with impressive performances in the tournament.  A primo recruiting class coming in for the 2009-2010 season.  Then Garrett blew it all up, Floyd left, Garrett released all the recruits (who proceeded to revive an Arizona program in decline after Lute Olson left) and the process started over again.

Sustained success is what it will take.  Not an occasional 11-seed or nice run in the Pac-12 tournament.  And if Enfield can achieve that, it won't matter whether the football team is winning NCs or being coached by the likes of Clay Helton and his merry gang of incompetent assistants.
