I've never done a study,

except with my eyeballs, but I don't think the conference tournaments, by and large, make a lot of money.  It probably makes money in the ACC, SEC and Big 10.  But I've been to the Pac-10/12 tournament when it was at Staples Center and except for the finals the place was pretty empty.  Maybe the TV rights make up for that, I don't know.  What I know is that there are too many tournaments for all of them to make real money.

My larger point is that if the incentive for having tournaments in the first place -- the chance to get more teams in the NCAA tournament -- went away, the conference tournaments would dry up pretty quickly.  The games would become meaningless and no network would spend big dollars for the rights.
