. . . he would have done this immediately after the season was over in order to solidify Helton's recruiting leverage.  The fact that he waited until the day before signing day speaks volumes.

. . . he also would have, concurrent with the season-end extension, backed up the money truck and dumped a load of money on Helton's lap for better, more experienced assistant coaches.  The fact that he didn't speaks volumes.

This way, he can $hitcan helton after 2018 and say, "Adios. We gave him an extension and he did not meet expectations.  See how fair we are with head coaches at USC?"
