Stanford University has named economist Jonathan Levinto head its top-ranked Graduate School of Business, succeeding the dean who made headlines by allegedly becoming entangled in a divorce and sex scandal involving two Stanford professors.

Levin's appointment takes effect Sept. 1.

Levin, 43, is the former chair of Stanford's Department of Economics and an expert in the field of industrial organization, according to the university. The appointment, revealed Monday by Stanford President John Hennessy and Provost John Etchemendy, will put him in charge of a highly rated 91-year-old program with 1,000 students and 272 faculty members.

The statement noted blandly that the current dean "is stepping down" after seven years in the post.

Levin's predecessor, Garth Saloner, said last September he planned to step down as dean at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year to defend himself in a lawsuit over the mess.

In an email to the Stanford business school community, Saloner said it was in the best interests of the university and the business school for him to step down, after seven years at the helm of the prominent graduate school, the school said at the time.
