The North was sponging off the South, no doubt.  But even if the ecomony of the North would have collapsed due to the CSA, the North could have re-invented themselves vis-a-vis a smaller government with a different model of trade.  They had the infrastructure and work force population necessary to do so, far more than the South.  

The threat of foreign intervention (i.e. Britain) in the wake of civil war was the largest threat to the Union, particularly a Southern alliance with Britain.  

My disgust with South Carolina stems from their insistence on thinking the Civil War is still being fought, more than any other Southern state.  If they want to exist on their own, the U.S. should let them.  See how far they get.
