Sort of a tweener for USC..

By: Contrarian

Rector came in when Porter went down in the Texas game last year and played predator for the USC.  He had about 6 sacks in the next 4 games and was a mid-season all american before breaking his hand and losing his effectiveness.

Now this year he is back, but so is Porter, who is better than him as a predator (there is no debate about that except on this board).  When USC plays its base 2-4-5 defense there are not a lot of positions available for linemen.  Jay Tufele, a 5-star out of high school that weighs about 310 pounds, is playing in front of Rector as a 3-technique defensive lineman.   Rector at 260+ isn't a great fit there. The one consistent knock on him has been his ability to play the run.  There are several other guys, all over 280, playing the postion (Trembley is there as well as Dorton and others) as well.  Rector  does not have the mobility to play the other outside linebacker slot opposite predator.

He is playing exclusively as a 3rd down pass rush specialist now.  He had 5 QB pressures and graded out very well in Saturday.

Excellent player without an every down fit in the Trojan defense, given the guys they had coming back.
