When I was a student at UCLA, I worked on a dock stripping container freight.  It was a good job for a college kid, paid well, and the hours were good for school.  It was on the LB/Compton border, pretty shitty neighborhood, but I just drove straight there and straight back, didn't venture out into the hood much.  

The Longshoreman's union expanded and we (Teamsters) were all told to pound sand and get lost, since that was now their territory.  Too bad, because most college kid jobs are for shit, and that was a good one.
