...USC is so dominant they don't have to score very many points or gain very many yards to be a great team. 

They take a lot of time between snaps, trying to get plays in, so they run fewer plays than most teams, which yields fewer yards.  Also, they commit a lot of penalities, and that limits the amount of time the offense is on the field.  

If you took away the slow-down offense and the penalities, they'd be averaging about 500 yards of offense per game.  But they don't need to, they're that good.
