What's love got to do with it?

Okay, that was kind of a joke. But my point was not that a coach cannot or should not be loved, but that a coach who goes out of his way to be a nice guy to his players will, ultimately, lose their respect.  

I'm sure Special Ed was approachable and "friendly" to his defensive linemen, but I seriously doubt their relationship could be described as equals, or friends. I'm guessing Ed was loved because he asked a lot -- no, demanded a lot -- from his players, and because he made them better as individuals and a team.
