But the checks they presented as evidence were to legitimate athletic accounts.  The defendants didn't steal that money (at least I hope not as that would speak volumes to USC's accounting methods).  Rather, the defendants were paid individually with separate bribes.

The checks to the athletic funds were a way to identify and gain access to potential co-conspiarators who would play along.
