You are correct, the relevant inquiry ito determine the impact of covid is determining how many more people died because of covid than would have died anyway.  Just because a lot of people who died had diabetes does not mean they would have died when they did in the absence of covid.  Another thing is that covid seems to be causing some long term negative symptoms that the flu typically does not.  However, Covid's impact on nursing home patients may mean that many who died would have died relatively soon anyway.  They are still victims of Covid but it is obvious that their deaths are not equivalent to the deaths of younger and healthier people.  Covid does appear to be much less lethal than the flu on people under the age of 12.
