Illegal alien convicted for 1992 Irvine murder.

Saw this earlier and this paragraph stuck out to me:

"Sanchez was located in 2014 in Mexico. A Mexican national, Sanchez has been arrested at least 25 times in Orange County and deported six times. He used at least 27 aliases and 19 separate birth dates."

Arrested 25 times (just in Orange County) and deported 6 times.  Give me a break.

From the OC Register:

"SANTA ANA – A career criminal was convicted Wednesday of killing an aspiring model more than two decades after her battered body was found in an Irvine orange grove.

An Orange County Superior Court jury found Leonardo Pimental Sanchez, now 59, guilty of first-degree murder, but the panel disagreed with the prosecution’s contention that the slaying occurred during a rape.

Deputy District Attorney Steve McGreevy told jurors during the trial that DNA evidence found on the body of 19-year-old Cari Ann Parnes tied Sanchez to the 1992 slaying.

Sanchez’s attorney, Adam Vining, acknowledged that his client had sex with Parnes, who was a prostitute, but denied that he killed her.

The manager of the long-gone orange grove off of Jeffrey Road discovered Parnes body on March 26, 1992. She was fully clothed with a bashed-in skull and broken jaw.

Parnes had moved to California two years before to pursue modeling. A cocaine addiction derailed her plans, as she turned from magazine shoots to private dancing to escort work and finally to street prostitution.

The investigation into her death went cold until 1997, when sexual-assault swabs taken from the crime scene were run through newly created DNA tests.

The test linked Parnes to Sanchez, who several years earlier had been convicted of rape in a nearby orange grove. During the trial, McGreevy told jurors that the lesson Sanchez learned from his earlier conviction – which resulted in five years in prison – was to not leave a witness alive.

Sanchez was located in 2014 in Mexico. A Mexican national, Sanchez has been arrested at least 25 times in Orange County and deported six times. He used at least 27 aliases and 19 separate birth dates.

Vining told jurors that Sanchez had paid to have sex with Parnes and was simply the only person who authorities could forensically tie to her in the days leading up to her death.

Vining noted that Parnes was leading a risky lifestyle and was known to rip off drug dealers or trade sex for drugs. He outlined the web of drug underworld ties that surrounded Parnes, and criticized detectives for supposedly not following up on numerous investigative strands.

Vining has filed a motion with the court arguing that the 25-year delay since the killing violated Sanchez’s right to a speedy trial.

If the judge were to uphold the defense motion, the jury’s verdict could be thrown out.

Had the jurors found that Sanchez murdered Parnes during a rape, he would have faced life in prison without parole. Now, Sanchez faces 25 years to life in prison."
