as opposed to total war, the losing parties can still pay their debts. Further, Wilsons utter and complete failure to force a just peace was an epically giant mistake that echoes until today.

The lengthy brutality of the post WWI continuing blockade of food was reprehensible.-- a war crime. The blockade was illegal during and after the war.

And as a side note, the USA didn't have to ally itself with either side.

The British Empire was not our ally, but instead a rival that precluded US goods from many markets. Wilson f'ed up.
