the words of Abraham Lincoln

"I have no purpose directly or indirectly to interfer directly or indirectly with slavery in states where it exists. I beleive I have no legal right to do so. Those who nominated me and elected me did so with full knowledge that I made this and many and many similar declarations and have never recanted them" Lincoln 1861

further Lincoln wrote

"I will say that I am not, nor have ever have been, in bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the black and white races, that I am not nor ever have been of making voters or jurors of negros, nor for allowing them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people, while they remain together their must be a position of superior and inferior and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race"  Lincoln 1858
