everyone thought the South would lose....considering they kicked ass at the beginning of the war. ...and Lee came very close to breaking the North at Gettysburg...as far as England they came close after the Trent Affair...but that lost steam when Lincoln apologized and freed his captives. The point was the South never wanted to invade the North to take over it's government they merely wanted the North to stay out of their affairs and treat them the same way they treated the North with taxes and tariffs. Lincoln would have none of that and started the war in order to keep his thumb on the South...Federal oppression was very clear simply by looking at the way the South was taxed and had tariffs applied compared to the North..
