and back to Armstrong

Last words on Armstrong

First, Java’s premise is that Armstrong couldn’t have done the course work or gone to SC so its all a sham. Having no first-hand evidence he assumes in his cynical way that’s how things are done so that’s how they must be.

So instead I looked for facts finding in Armstrongs own first hand words form a 1971 interview and elsewhere what he did and when.

The historical facts are this

A)  Published books and records indicate Mr. Armstrong attended USC for five years, well before he was the man on the moon or a hero warranting some special treatment. He didn’t wander through Sc one day and get a degree. He was very busy so it took him a long while to complete the actual coursework.

B)  Armstrong took the GRE and applied to USC in the customary fashion not getting any special treatment while he was at NACA.

C) Historical records indicate he finished all of his coursework ending with him rendering his thesis orally for the Masters of Science a seminar on NASA operations and the lunar landing a long time after his coursework. After he completed all the other coursework and landed on the moon, if there was any favoritism shown it was in that his last item to complete was verbal, how verbal thesis are not uncommon including Q&A “defense”.

The most definitive answer is this original NASA interview from September 1971.

https://history.nasa.gov/ap11ann/interviewspdf/armstrongsept71.pdf

“Armstrong went to Edwards to fly the X-15. He also

attended USC, and by the time be became an astronaut he had completed his work for his master's degree excepting his thesis. In January 1970 he went to USC and was allowed to render his thesis orally, and was granted his M.S. I asked if this had been publicized, and he said he didn't think so, except locally.”

D)USC was a pioneer in Aeronautical Engineering with the center of gravity of the national aerospace industry being in southern California. As such there was an ongoing flow of future astronauts, scientists and engineers from SC and LA going back and forth to Edwards Airforce Base.

E)  It is worth noting that his admissions card shows NACA not NASA.  NACA became NASA in 1958 per Wikipedia. This shows the timing of when Armstrong started at SC. He spent 5 years part time at SC very early leaving only his verbal seminar he completed much later. He finished his coursework at SC in the early 60s not long after Purdue.

Armstrong maintained a home in Westwood with his wife, traveling back and forth to Edwards, the LA Air Force base in El Segundo, contractors in west LA-Torrance etc and Edwards Air  Force Base for part of his time in Ca.

When he was hired at University of Cincinnati as a full Professor there was jealousy that he only had a masters, not a PHD. There was not jealousy that he had some bogus honorary degree or otherwise.

SCs pioneering work in distance education is well documented. It is still used at places like Edwards for engineers to sharpen their skills.

Armstrong did not consider his SC degree honorary. When asked he listed his honrary dgrees, not USC.

In summary his normal application to SC including the GRE well bebefore his fame, his completion of all coursework required at USC, and a number of other indicators all show that in spite of half-baked speculative assertions otherwise he was in fact a Trojan. He started at SC in the late 50s and finished his coursework in the early 60s other than hishis presentation of his thesis. This timeline undermines the assertion “that he couldn’t have completed all that” and “they just gave it to him.

He used his skills gained at SC throughout the 60s leading to the moon landing

Armstrong was a great Trojan German American—here are the details:

The first man to walk on the moon (in July 1969), Neil Armstrong, spent five years in graduate study in USC's aerospace engineering program. The fourth man to .

As to B) C) and D) above:

On a historical note, the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, was among most renowned USC aerospace graduates of those times. He had studied part time while being stationed at the Edwards Air Force Base in California as a test pilot [10]. Armstrong had completed all required coursework, except the seminar, towards Master’s degree when he joined NASA in early 1960s and transferred to Houston in Texas. In January 1970, Armstrong gave a one-hour [verbal defense of thesis] seminar on the technical aspects of landing Apollo’s lunar module Eagle on the surface of the Moon in 1969 and received – immediately after the seminar – his Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from USC."
