Selling the Civil War

By: Rodeoduck

Once Lincoln decided that he did not want the Southern States to leave the Union, he needed a reason that "sings" in order to get people to fight in his war.

Saying something like "the tariffs on the South are profitable, I want you to fight to keep them" probably would not attract many recruits.

Something like "Having the Southern States leaving the Union makes me look like a failure, help me avoid the embarrassment" just does not "sing" as a reason to join the army.

But saying "we need to get rid the evil of slavery" would attract abolitionists among othersas army recruits. As a reason it "sings". So then that was a reason given to the common person as a motivation to fight for the Union.
