If you like

-coastal real estate

-mellow people

Its worth looking at. We did a great trip to wineries, trains, coast etc at a reasonable price. They got beat up by the 2008 financial crisis and the R/E reflects that crash. It's worth a trip. If you like Santa Barbara and foreign countries there is value there.

Rent first. Make smaller bets and can find what you like. As a simple example, a small town can be "quiet and nice" or "dull and boring". Small things like local restaurants, distance to trains, bread delivery routes, access to healthcare etc can be tougher to ascertain on quick jaunts.
