Demographics have changed

By: Petros Papakakas

dramatically over the last 10-15 years in Compton. Still high crime, just less violent crime. City was predominantly black in the 80s and 90s. Hispanics started moving in with larger numbers right around the millennium. Other areas within south central, like watts, are actually worse and always have been. Compton gangs just had better drug connections with the cartels, which generated the higher numbers in shootings. Watts has extreme poverty and has even more violence than Compton, especially these days. Probably more than you wanted to know, just saying Art could make some money in Compton. Sure, you’ll get hit a few times a year, but it’s doable. Liquor stores do well in da hood. Many don’t have cars so they do their grocery shopping there and pay almost double for goods like bread, milk and condiments. Not many grocery stores there either. Maybe it’s changed a little- I haven’t really been in the city since ‘08.
