Funny how the blue states are the red states. Moving your family is the most serious statement one can make about the local state of affairs. CA & NY suck the most.
Emigrants from other countries want a taste of home, but for domestic migrants, if you want your new home like your old home,, why move? I don't think they want the old crime,, taxes, and government incompetence. People I know from NYC acted like they were slumming,, culturally and educationally,, but they left.
Speaking of insurance,, radical environmentalists prevented PG&E from clearing dry,, ultra-flammable brush from around their power lines. A busted line ignited a sever fire. The increased the fire risk for surrounding communities, but CA State law forbade increasing insurance premiums. Fearing that potential losses could wipe them out, these companies would not renew policies or write new ones. Nobody turns down an opportunity to make money,, but insurance companies will be blamed for this untenable situation.
In the house I have in the mountains we get severe fines if we don't clear the areas around the property to avoid fires. And they are on us like white on rice. I haven't heard if the cause of the fire was a downed power line. I have heard homeless, I have heard arsonists, i don't know .
The high winds were in the forecast in the days prior to the fire and they did cut off power in many areas before the fire started. All of us around here are familiar with the Santa Ana winds, nothing new. But the day and night these fires got going, the winds were incredibly strong. Airplanes were rerouted at LAX to land from the ocean instead of over the city. Crazy winds.
If an arsonist starts a fire and with those winds and houses made of sticks (wood) and in densely populated areas, nothing could have stopped this.
Losses of this magnitude just might require a government bail out. By the way, the state sponsored California Fair Plan is already in financial trouble, this just might bankrupt it.
