New home permits are already at dangerous lows because of the high mortgage rates throw in higher building costs and it can’t be good. Construction jobs are among the higher paying jobs.,
The US produces all the Building materials needed. What the F are they getting from Mexico? Not Douglas fir that’s for sure. Steel? Gypsum ( drywall). Huh? Yeah, Canada supplements lumber. But not needed.
All the US does is give those Countries money nd treat the US like crap. D badmouth us.
yes we get a lot of soft wood products from Canada whose price is affected by the new tariffs, but the Canadian dollar is crashing, and they are predicting a loss of 600k to 1m jobs, which substantial given the size of their economy which is smaller than both TX and NY individually. A devalued Canadian dollar will offset the effect of tariffs, and the loss of jobs cannot be sustained by social programs already strained to the limit by illegal immigration (sound familiar?)
second, under Trudeau and their liberal government, Canada has failed to fully develop their natural resources like softwood timber, similar to CA, CO, and the Pacific NW under both liberal local government and our liberal bureaucracy.
One thing will happen, our new Sec of the Interior is pledged to develop our hundreds of trillions of national resources to both enrich our country and pay off our debt, and that includes timber.
One thing may happen, Canada may soon choose a conservative government that will pledge itself to unlock the development their hundreds of trillions of natural resources to both enrich their country and pay off their debt.
One thing won't happen, we will no longer subsidize their economy, unless there is some tangible benefit to our economy.
I predict that the Fed and it's insistence on keeping interest rates high will prove to be a bigger impediment to development than the price of softwood lumber, followed by local zoning and permitting issues
