When Koufax took the mound to take his warm up pitches in game 1 of the ‘63 WS, most of Yankees came to the top step to watch him throw his 8 warm up pitches. EVERY pitch popped the glove. They watched as Koufax threw at a leisure 80% effort and easily hit 95 on the radar gun. Yogi Berra was standing by Yankee manager Ralph Houk and asked in awe…”who is that?” as he pointed to the mound. Houk kept watching Koufax and told his club “that gentleman, is Sandy Koufax.” Berra turned to look for Mantle. Mickey had put his head down, shaking it in disbelief. When Houk told Berra that Koufax was 25-5 that year Yogi responded “I can see how he won twenty-five games. What I don’t understand is how he lost five.”
Koufax won Games 1 and 4, pitching complete games in both, allowing three total runs with 23 strikeouts in his 18 innings to win World Series MVP.
Hitting that curve is pure luck.
