As a kid I was not a Ted Williams fan. I was a Stan Musial fan, and in my neighborhood you could only be a fan of one or the other.
Williams retired at the end of 1960. The Angels started playing in 1961 and I was immediately a fan. They played at Wrigley Field, not too far from the Coliseum, and it was a great place to see a game.
My first Angels game is a weeknight with my Dad and uncle. They're playing the Red Sox, first year without Williams. The uncle is a big Williams fan. I've got my first baseman's mitt because, well, there's a real chance I'll get a foul ball.
I go through the turnstile, followed by my Dad and uncle. As we get through, my uncle says, "Turn around." I do, and it's Ted Williams right behind us. My uncle starts gushing to Williams about how great he was and I stick out my glove and ask for an autograph. I knew what his signature looked like from baseball cards and a signed photo from him in my collection. He signed and the signature matched.
Ted Williams .400 story. This is a great one.
