How long did Tony Gwynn chew tobacco?

For 31 years (1977 to 2008) Gwynn used one and a half to two cans of Skoal smokeless tobacco per day. It was the equivalent of four to five packs of cigarettes every day for 31 years.

I chewed Levi Garrett for many years. Definitely had its negative effects.

But no one put a gun to my head to use it. I knew the risks.

Never touched the stuff. Never liked to chew gum or go through a bag of sunflower seeds when playing baseball.

Watched my hard working dad have a heart attack when he was 43. He could lose 5-10 pounds at most. Doctor told him that if he stopped immediately…went cold turkey…that he could live 7 more years. Freaked my dad out. Never smoked again. He had beer after work but nothing more than that. Lived to be 86 with no other health issues.

Never a gum chewer but I could plow through seeds. Plain. All the flavors came out when I coached. Kids like them. Not me. Give me plain David’s. I stopped when I stopped coaching. It’s not something you can really do around the house without disgusting yourself

But yeah. Tony knew the risks. It’s like kids today who think there is no risk of pot or vaping. Really? You’re ingesting chemical smoke into your lungs. You think there’s no consequence for that? Don’t be stupid.

I have a friend on the lake who has a pontoon boat he and his wife are the party couple if you want to hear music and see 20 people floating around mostly drunk all weekend. He is the guy. First in the water in February or March last one out in November When he’s not on the lake, he has one of those hundred thousand dollar jeeps and his climbing all over rocks and getting stuck and pulled out by his friend in the desert. And at night they make campfires and of course drink all night. At our company Christmas party this year his wife explained that he had “nonalcoholic cirrhosis of the liver“ I almost spit up my Sprite and said “sure it is“

Maybe it is the nonalcoholic kind but those 3 to 5 mixed drinks a night sure aren’t helping he’s been in the hospital three times in the last year and that’s not counting the 911 call by the side of the freeway where he had a “heart episode “ perhaps when it’s all done his family will sue Jack Daniels. The wife looking me right in the eye and telling me the slow death is non alcoholic was both disheartening and mind blowing
