The Angels gave up two of their only real prospects and last remaining chips for roughly 45 innings of Giolito/Lopez over one month. What an absolute dumpster fire.

"Quittin’ time for Arte Moreno" is right: he needs to sell to someone who can field a championship team.
RIP, Contending Angels (2023-2023)
Someone will write a heartbreaking book on the 2023 Angels one day. We hit the sad epilogue yesterday, one month after the season was nearly saved and another month before the season is even over. Let’s zoom out and look at the arc:
Pre-season: The Shohei Ohtani conversation was already underway. He’d made zero long-term commitment to the franchise, but it entered the season with high hopes that a great year could convince him to stay.
Mid-season: Ohtani produced one of the best stints we have ever seen, dominant on the mound and at the plate. The Angels slumped early but surged just before the Aug. 1 trade deadline. Instead of trading Ohtani for value while they still could, the Angels were buyers. They even shipped out some nice prospects.
Now: The team is 8-18 since, fully out of contention. Ohtani tore his UCL last week. Yesterday, the team put multiple starters on waivers, giving up on the season once and for all. Lucas Giolito, a prime deadline acquisition, was in that group.
What a bizarre time. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it. The Angels might not, either.
