I think the chiding was more to do with the fact that you guys made rings to celebrate it. USC making the elite 8 was a huge accomplishment, no argument about that. It was the Mr. T-esque jewelry that was the talking point.
UCLA probably hangs a banner for conference titles somewhere in Pauley, but they don't hang them in the rafters as far as I know.
USC may have won the "regular season" in football last season, according to you, but the "regular season" includes the conference title game. So, USC was not the regular season champs. Utah was. Conference championship games determine the regular season champ in football, but not in basketball (which is why conference championships and tournament championships are listed separately in the archives). The conference championship games in both football and basketball are money grabs and should be eliminated, but nobody who determines real post-season play pays attention to conference titles in basketball. One only has to look at the NCAA tournament seedings to determine that. Conversely, you have to win the football conference championship game in order to go to the big bowl for that conference.
