There is absolutely no comparison to be made here, once you look at the number of games involved for each guy.
Roger Maris had 162 games in which to get 61 home runs, compared to Babe Ruth, who got 60 homers in 154 games. That's a bit tainted, but it is what it is. And it's possible that Ruth may not have hit another homer with 8 extra games, although not probable.
But 143 games vs. 83 games is absolutely absurd when we're talking about hoops. That's almost two full seasons extra. Why is anybody making a big deal out of this?
