I was lucky enough to see a large private collection that had a ton of Kareem's things on display many years ago. It was a private pop culture/sports museum and there were a ton of really cool things. Everything from Gibby's walk-off Homer collection to old baseball cards (even a Honus Wagner) to movie memorabilia. I don't know if it was on loan or whatever, but sounds like a lot of the same stuff he auctioned off.
Did you ever spend any time back in the day at the original Helms Hall museum and library? In the days before computers and manufactured memorabilia, it was the bomb. My buddy and I spent a ton of time there in high school, working on answering sports quizzes and getting to know the executive director and his assistant.
He's an unamerican, commie piece of shit. He's the perfect example of public schools and the pisshole that is the State of California and it's flagship "school". I'm not surprised that you like him.
If they're talking about his UCLA memorabilia, he only won 3 championships ('67, '68, '69). He was the National POY in those years as well, which I suppose means 3 MVPs.
But if they're talking about his NBA career, he won 6 NBA titles ('71, '80, '82, '85, '87, '88) and a record 6 MVP awards ('71, '72, '74, '76, '77, '80).
Not unusual for a former athlete to sell his championship hardware but rare ( unheard of) to donate the proceeds. In 2005 I was business partners with a mega rich dude that owns a sports museum in LA . The museum houses his personal collection, takes up an entire floor ( Appx 50,000 sq ft) in our office building. So Kareem who is a big sports collectible buff made a private appointment to tour the museum. Prior to his visit, Kareem asked that we keep the employees away from him and that no one approach him for any reason. Kareem walked in and his size certainly made you look but everyone pretty much went about their business. Some were turned off by his request. Kareems personality and relationships with the media and teammates killed his chance at an nba coaching career. Never saw him at ucla other than videos but saw him with the Lakers from the beginning. It would be 1vs 5 at times and they still had to foul him. The skyhook was a lethal weapon. My favorite was his skyhook from the baseline.
Nice move. Better than having to sell off the stuff to pay off judgments.
I have a strange affinity for Kareem. First, we were classmates, but at different schools. I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan, though. I saw all his games against SC from the SC student section -- from his games on the freshman team to his sophomore debut when he dropped 56 on Bill Hewitt and gave up 39, to the two gut-wrenching stall games that ended in SC losses, to the finale in '69 when SC handed UCLA its first-ever loss at Pauley Pavilion.
We both got sick about a dozen years ago and were saved by the same drug, Gleevec, for which Kareem has been (and may still be) a spokesman.
Those were really good teams I remember Westphal, Layton, Padgett and Mackey really well. I think Riley was the center. Gus Williams was the year before right?

There's something wrong with those numbers.

Nice gesture. HTownTrojan
