A lot of chaos in the first 24 hours of Iditarod ‘24

Megan Bradley is reporting:

Still piecing together the details, but in first 24 hours of #Iditarod24: a musher punched an aggressive moose in the face, the next musher had to shoot it (which means stopping to field dress it, according to official rules); then third musher's team ran into the carcass.

Sounds like very close encounters for both Jesse Holmes and Dallas Seavey, who somehow had to move a moose off his sled...hope his sled is still serviceable.

Update:

“From @DallasSeavey's team on FB. Musher + dogs all ok, with one dog dropping from the race and flown back to Anchorage to be checked by vets. Moose meat usually goes to the closest village, or whoever can turn up to collect it.”

Some lucky villagers are going to have a tasty dinner tonight and for the next month.

That’s a lot venison yes. Elk I think at gun barrel Jackson hole. Bison a few times. Don’t cook it well gone or med well. Too lean. No birds or horses. Oh wait. Some delicate fancy little gamebird that I had a high-end resort. I had to pick that little thing apart with my fingers that was weird. I had like gator nuggets at Mel Tilley’s place in Dallas or Fort Worth but they were so breaded and fried to be honest with you. It didn’t taste like much. It was a little spongy though.

eating horse is normal in France. I wouldn't have ordered it , but It's one of those things when they serve it, so you sort of have to at least try it. Sauce could have made anything palatable. The thing about France is that they won't serve you anything that is bad. Not even a sandwich at a gas station. Fresh bread and ingredients. It's the ONLY thing they are good at.

Tried Gator in Tallahassee. Was there for an SC game. Met some rich FSU alum on the plane ride there. Was playing golf at his club and on about about the 5th hole, I meandered into a sand trap and came face to face with a freaking Alligator . A real one. Pretty big too. At least a lot bigger than I am. Like one I had seen on Mutual of Omaha Wild Kington as a little kid. It looked at me. I looked at it and gripped my sand wedge. I ran one way. It ran the other, thank God. This old FSU dude laughed his ass off. Then he looked sad for a second and told me that his favorite black lab was eaten by an Alligator in front of his estate the spring before. I told him he was nuts to live in a place like this. It rains WARM water there, what the hell. That's just not natural. He told me it's better than being cold in Michigan. Anything is better than that.

That night some friends arrived for the game and we went to a restaurant and it had Gator on the menu. Tasted just like calamari, yawn.

Game food is much better for you. But like anything good for you all game food pretty much sucks. Killing your meal is something every man should do at least once. And no fishing doesn't count. Those things can't fight back. To me it's a food chain and bucket list thing. sc
