I think it's pretty clear, at least to me, that USC is going to quickly become a power again, on a national level. But the transition will be even quicker than it was during the early days of Pete Carroll. The reason is that Carroll took a half-season of his team sucking before there was steady improvement (that didn't end for many years). While it's difficult to predict an entire era, let alone season, based on only three games, I don't see any glaring issues with USC that a deeper roster wouldn't fix. It looks like USC may lose a couple of games this season, maybe more, but once recruiting picks up even more, well, no reason to believe USC won't be in the national conversation quite a bit.
As a UCLA grad and fan, I obviously did not want to see this happen. But I knew that Riley was much more of a HC than any of those fraudulent wonderboy offensive coordinator-types USC went for in recent years. So I kind of expected a quick start out of the gate. By the time trojies enter Big 10 play, they should be a very tough out for any team.
My only hope for UCLA being able to get ready for Big 10 play is for the Bruins to have a shitass season. This is also something I did not want to see happen.
I think the vast majority of Bruin fans knew that 8-4 last season was the bare minimum the Bruins had to do, and they squeaked by. And yet the Bruins didn't beat a single team with a winning record.
There was some good news with DTR and Charbonnet returning, and the Bruins do seem to have "hired" some good replacements at receiver. But with a thin and only moderately decent OL, and a new DC who hadn't coached a defense in 10 years, most of us knew the Bruins were going to fight an uphill battle in 2022. And now it looks like they are. I'm not fooled by 3-0 for a second, and I really wonder just who could be.
The issues on defense continue, the SAME issues, and there just isn't going to be enough quality depth because Chip fucking hates to recruit. Offensively the Bruins should do okay, but they're not going to be able to keep up because of the defense. That is the exact same thing we were saying four years ago, and nothing has changed.
I hate to see the Bruins lose, but I think the timing is right for a really shitty UCLA football season, one that should have most of the slapdicks on this site wetting themselves several times daily. But I hope that Chip gets fired by the end of the season. Of course, it's meaningless if Jarmond doesn't find a better guy and isn't looking for one already. But I predict that he is already looking. I wanted Chip Kelly out three years ago, and that's no shit.
The new coach will have recruited about 1.5* recruiting classes by the time the Bruins enter Big 10 play. Depending on the portal and other factors, the Bruins could have a team that might be able to compete in that conference and, hopefully, continue to improve.
If Chip Kelly is the HC at UCLA in 2023, UCLA is fucked. Gonna take many years to be able to break out of the lower half of the Big 10.
I hope I'm wrong about all of this -- that Riley sucks and Kelly finally learns how to coach. Well, pretty clear.
*Concerning an incoming coach at the end of a season, I refer to his first recruiting class as 1/2 of a class because the class will feature some kids he didn't recruit.
two dudes full of shit....both proclaimed DTR as one of the top QBs in the Pac 12. They play the easiest schedule in the country this year.....10 wins a lock....WAAAAAAA WAAA
I believe Chip will shit the sheets this season and will be fired/resign. The cupboard will be 1/2 full, and of discount brand players or low level mercenaries so it will be a full rebuild. Actually not rebuild, that would assume there was something there in the first place. It will be like building a brand new program from the ground up. Very few, if any current commits will sign with UCLA, and the ones that would be willing to would likely be asked to look elsewhere by the new staff. The new staff will start next season with another dog crap schedule that will be used to try and establish an identity and then it's last season of a dying PAC..
