After studying and seeing the IMPORTANCE of a rookie NFL QBs ecosystem I wanted to dive into something. Here is the premise. Trying to see where trading a lot of draft capital to move up to get a future franchise QB actually didn’t work. My research says it happens a lot.
The idea of a losing franchise giving up a lot of FUTURE draft capital to get their franchise QB is a risky business. A team drafting top 3 in the draft typically has a horrible record/team and then they are weakening their future going forward.
Threw In the famous Hershel Walker and Ricky Williams Trade for Context.
2021- Trey Lance (49ers)
Sent two FUTURE firsts plus a third round to move up from 12 to 3
Brock Purdy (Mr Irrelevant) really saved the day last few years. 49ers gave up alot to get Trey and he did zilch.
Robert Griffith III - (Redskins)
Three 1sts plus a 2nd.
RG3 hurt his knee In his rookie year. Kirk Cousins saved the day somewhat.
Mitch Trubisky - Bears (2017)
Traded a 1st, two 3rds and a 4th with 49ers to move up ONE spot.
Bears passed on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson in this draft.
2021- Russell Wilson (Denver)
Two 1sts, two 2nds and a fourth with Seattle.
Plus Seattle recieved Noah Fant, Drew Lock and some other players.
Russ went 11-19 and was released.
1999- Hershel Walker trade.
Jimmy Johnson was a genius. Called this the “Great Train Robbery”. Received 4 quality nfl starters in trade with Vikings but didn’t play them and receive compenstory compensation.
Ended up with Three 1sts, three 2nds, 6th and a future 3rd.
Dallas ended up with HOFer Emmitt, Russell
Maryland, sb mvp Daryl Woodson and all
Pro CB Kevin Smith.

Deshaun Watson - Browns (2022)
Texans fleeced Cleveland for Two 1sts, two 4ths and one 3rd.
Cleveland shipped Baker M a year after a
Playoff run and browns have sucked since.
2020 - Stafford Goff Trade
Detroit received two 1sts plus a 3rd.
Rams win a SB. Detroit has been elite since.
A rare win win trade? Rams somehow navigated around the lack of high end draft capital.

2018 - Sam Darnold (Jets)
Sent three 2nds to move up from 6th to 3rd overall with Colts. Jets kept Their 1sts but missed On picks like OT Mechi Becton who was traded after a few subpar years with jets to Philly and they moved him to Guard and was an all Pro last year. Jets also
Missed on wr help for Sam. Picked
Denzel mims who finished his nfl career with 42 receptions.
1999 - Ricky Williams (Saints)
3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th (1999) plus another 1st and 3rd in 2000.
Funny side story. Washington Packaged some Of the 1999 draft haul And sent to Chicago to get #7 pick and grabbed HOFer champ Bailey.
This trade is As bad as it gets. Especially for a non QB and likeable Pot head.

Personally all things considered the RAMs trade with Detroit was not a great trade when you look at the talent Detrout got out of that trade Super Bowl or no Super Bowl...IMHO
this is why I think the NFL is a GM league and coaching is rather over-rated. The NFL is a copy cat league where everyone is basically running the same Os and Ds. It really comes down to spotting talent, esp at qb, wrs, cbs and DEs, and getting a great FG kicker.
