Organization and select recruiting. It's how he got 5 star talent to OK, not the greatest place to live.
He would recruit a top QB every two years. Obviously had some transfers but not all of them played right away. Everything was a two year program. Elite WR's recruit a bunch then recruit none. Do that all over the roster and pretty much meant he'd recruit about 22-25 guys a year. Half the roster positions, then flip it the next. So to speak.
I think the plan for USC QB was the same. Miller Moss was supposed to QB USC for 1 year while Maiava was the back up. Moss would head top the NFL. Maiva with one year starting at UNLV and one year sitting at USC would then have one year as a starer at USC. With Lewis as the back up. Meanwhile Walker Lyons would play his senior year.
I presume the thought was Maiava would go to the NFL and then Lewis would step in and start in 26 and 27. Lyons would come on the USC campus and back up Lyons in 27 and start in 28 and 29.
I don't know what his thoughts were about having a backup QB for 2026 since all he would have was Lewis.
I think his plan remains the same for Longstreet.
At WR, USC brought in a haul of Lane, Lemon, Duce, Branch with Hudson already on the roster. They have some transfers behind them. I think Lane will transfer after this year and be replaces by Jerome Myles. Similar body and type of receiver. Top flight guy. And I think USC NEXT year will recruit a ton of talent similar to their class above. So I think Lemon Duce and Branch all leave early? No. I think one might. Lemon possibly. IMO the best of the bunch is Lane but something is happening ala Mario Williams there. Doghouse
Point is, I think this is the way Riley recruits the skill positions at least. USC is stacked at TE, having 3-4 young guys all underclassmen. Mc Ree Tabaracci, Eldridge, Lyons. So I would think they would back off there for a couple years.
Good points. Bottom line is SC wasn’t prepared for the NIL Collective era. We crawled our way into it fearful that we would break rules. In addition, we whiffed on a number OL/DL line prospects. The only West coast school that has flourished with NIL is OR, and only because of one monster donor. Give SC some time to get our NIL in order, and we will be back on top.
