When CLR was hired , I was the Only poster that didn't do backflips.
No, I didn't think it wasn't an upgrade . Compared to the prior 5 years just about anyone would be an upgrade.
My concern was from what I read from the Oklahoma boards. He ignores defense entirely. Now that would have been just fine and dandy if he actually brought in a good, didn't even have to be great defensive coordinator and let that coach run that side of the ball.
Then I looked into The Grinch. Saw he did OK with lesser talent at serial murder training U (wsu). But was anything but good at Oklahoma. Serious Oklahoma football fans hated him. He stunk even when he got "his guys" to run his scheme.
Then I added up the numbers as saw that in their three biggest games they averaged giving up 54 points a game under Riley and Grinch. How moly 162 points in 3 freaking games. That's where the snarky nickname came from. Never seen anything like that before , well until they embarrassed the University on Monday. USC is both the envy (thanks to it's offense) and the laughing stock of college football.
I really like CLR . Really Smart guy. Likable guy. Awesome quarterback whisperer, recruiter. Might be best ever. Love his offense and how he works in the running game. Love seeing wide open receivers for the first time in years. Love how he took the reigns off Caleb in the ETCU game. Perfect timing. Pac 12 defensive coordinators must have shit their pants.
So what is CLR going to do about his embarrassing defense and problems on special teams? I really doubt the quotes that the players run the program. I don't get that from CLR. I think he is going to do something to fix it. For whatever reason Kids couldn't or wouldn't tackle . Kids took bad pursuit angles. Tripped over each other like keystone cops. Gave up ridiculous long plays game after game after game. We all saw the problems.
Should be interesting to see if The Grinch stays. My guess is he does. Which D coaches are replaced. If nothing else, this team will tackle better next season. Couldn't get any worse and that may be just enough to win a lot of games. Future is bright. sc
I didn't do backflips either, fuck face.
executive summary for those with a litter box, grease trap, or sling blade to clean:
'Couldn't get any worse... Future is bright. sc'
They went from 4-8 to 11-3 and new years bowl.
hated the ending.
your prediction wasn’t a revelation. Was a statement of the obvious when looking at usc d last year. They’ve had a decent to good o awhile.
we will see what 2023 brings.
nice try at. “Look at me “ post but I’m not biting
The Bowl Season is essentially over. 2022 Season is over.
It has been quiet....which offers time for all of us to look to the future (especially the next few critical weeks).
USC needs to "close" on more DL and LB talent. To accomplish that.....USC needs to offer those DEFENSIVE recruits the same exciting enthusiastic platform that CLK offered the OFFENSIVE recruits the past few years.
For this reason....(and I'm admittedly.... not in touch with current recruiting results and momentum).....this is a great time to bring in a top "name" DC.....but avoid "making change only for the sake of change".
CLK had to really rush last year to assemble coaching staff. Grinch was low-hanging fruit". I've liked Grinch in interviews and as a person. Respect him as a coach....but the USC record is the USC record.
Can Grinch/CLK turn USC Defense's personnel/scheme around next year....to compliment Caleb Williams in his last year?
Pete Carroll was USC's DC......he brought in Norm Chow on Day 1... and later others after Norm to run his offense.
If USC is going to make the switch.....the time is now.
stopped at "backflips"
no way you have those skills
being so inflexible and all
For the first part of your post you have been vindicated, congrats there.
If Grinch does not go there has to be some other wholesale changes as it relates to technique emphasis and practice. And maybe fewer pre-snap movements designed to confuse the offense, but confuses, or misplaces, our own defenders instead. Better tackling and simpler play calls should help.
Even a part time ST coach would help. What a disaster they were.
A special teams coach would be a refreshing change.
Future is bright, defense will be more experience and more talented, offense will be dynamite, 4-8 to 11-3
hard to beat that and two last second losses. Thank you Mario. The off season will be fun. Can’t wait for September.
