"Gabriel is considered one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football. The three-year starter at UCF missed much of his junior season with a broken clavicle. In his first two years as the starter, Gabriel threw for a combined 7,200 yards and 61 touchdowns against just 11 interceptions. In 2020, and led the nation in passing with 357 yards per game.
A lefty, and a bit undersized, he's a bit reminiscent of UCLA's Hall of Fame QB Cade McNown, with similar play-making ability, accuracy, vision and mobility. He's an excellent fit for Chip Kelly's pro-style offense.
247Sports had Gabriel as the No. 2-ranked quarterback in the transfer portal.
UCLA was all over Gabriel as soon as he went into the transfer portal and UCLA quarterbacks coach Ryan Gunderson went out to Hawaii to visit him (Gabriel prepped at Mililani High School in Hawaii). Ole Miss was thought to be the natural landing point, but with offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who recruited him to UCF, leaving Oxford to be the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, the Rebels suddenly lost their pole position for Gabriel. Enter UCLA, which needs to replace Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who is almost certainly leaving even though he has the COVID year of eligibility. Gabriel officially visited UCLA last weekend, and then the 247Sports Crystal Balls started flying. UCLA Director of Player Personnel Ethan Young tweeted out three "BOOMS!" recently, and Gabriel was one of them.
Gabriel has played two full years at UCF, but then played in just three games this season before the injury. That would enable him to use a redshirt for this season and, with the added COVID year, he would have three years or eligibility remaining."
