25 players saw the field
21 of them made the score sheet
seven TFLs a couple of which were really sacks
four or five 3 and outs including three in a row
all of which ARE turnovers
edit: overall SC got nine stops on third and fourth downs, eight net turnovers on downs or punts
only six missed tackles which is better than any game last year
while not ideal, even the best teams usually perform at this level
the d-line is getting pressure with four rushers for a change
not sunshine pumping
just trying to keep some of you from jumping off the ledge
as I pointed out earlier SC gave up at least five big plays for a TD or so
and that needs to be cut in half or less
a six year quarterback did expose the secondary
so that has to get better before October shows up
AND the offense needs to stop giving opponents the ball at midfield with time on the clock
because good teams can and will score
in contrast to the D, the offense played 35 players
so I'm thinking that the rebuild of the defense is still in progress
and that a lot of the negative press towards Grinch is really hatemail
in an effort to prevent him and SC from getting the players they need in future
Multiple times USC's DEnds lost "outside contain" on multiple pocket passing situations allowing QB to run outside for big gains, Critical to maintain lane integrity. Notably Deijon Laffitte got sucked inside badly and gave up the corner/edge multiple times allowing QB outside for big gains.
Good post. Also, are you up at 4:00 am?
I'm currently defending Grinch and Riley, but the truth is the jury is still out here. I was pleased to see solid tackling vs a fairly athletic squad in SJSU. If tackling was the issue (and maybe it still is), it's too late now to fix it. Last year was proof of that.
Most of what I saw was either missed assignments (fixable), offense letting down the D (definitely fixable) or weaknesses in the scheme (very worrisome, given this should have been addresses the last 8 months, but theoretically fixable). The coaches have work to do, but with the next couple of weak opponents, they have their window of opportunity. It's up to them.
