A franchise tag means the player has to be in the top 3 or 5(can't recall) paid at the position, but cannot seek more in free agency, stays tied with the team. I believe teams are restricted on how many they can use.
I don't understand the full ramifications because he's on a multi-year rookie deal, which would seem to preclude the need for a franchise tag. Somebody has to know more.
