Wasserman is vested in the decision to bring Chip to UCLA. And he will be consulted, involved and writing a check with a lot of zeroes on it for the next coach. I think he is trying to save face in public but has secretly agreed to putting Chip against the wall and in front of the firing squad. He just doesn't want to see the bloody mess or carry the corpse. The Chip era in Westwood is over. The king is dead, long live the king.

Could very well be true, but it's still a horrible look. Optics. Whatever you want to call it. And it could still screw this whole thing up.

Casey Wasserman is essentially saying that Chip Kelly has done a good job and deserves to stick around. He said the call to fire Chip is "ridiculous", and that Chip should be allowed to coach the Bruins in their inaugural season in the B1G.

At this point, nobody knows much about how this story came about. But it's not good for any UCLA fan who wants Chip gone. I'm thinking that perhaps this is buyer's remorse, since Casey is probably the donor most responsible for getting Fatty to Westwood. Maybe Casey just doesn't want to look like a total schmendrick for having endorsed and paid for a coach who turned out to suck shit.
