Coastal won 9 games last year and 95% of their offensive production retuned. The Bruins held them to under 50 yds rushing and Coastal only had 12 total yards in the 4th quarter. The only blight - jumping offsides 6 times. which helped extend at least 2 drives.
This is the first Bruins game since the days of Kendricks and Brown in which the linebackers weren't substituted all game long on each drive. Last year it seemed like 9 linebackers played. No more. The DC must have told KN that the top 2 linebackers are Medrano land Muasau and that they will play 90% of the time. They both played well and led in tackles. Kaho played a bit - he looks like an NFL backer. Oladejo played a little in run situations. Glad to see the revolving door method of KN is over.
The Interior D-Line played well. Toia, Williams, Smith, and Magna were stout and Carolina's backs had a tough time.
Latu had 3 sacks off the edge. SDSU's left tackle is in trouble. The Murphy twins are both improved. Jones made some big plays too.
Coastal Carolina's top receiver made a nice catch on a deep ball. Humphrey was there but lost his balance. Humphrey also looked bad missing a tackle a few plays later but redeemed himself with great pick. Kirkwood had a solid game. Davies had a nice pick. The Bruins don't have a Travis Hunter but nobody does other than Prime. As a group, the corners aren't going to shut down great WRs but they are the best group since UCLA had Verner and the 5-star guy who went on to play with the Giants.
Kamari Ramsey had a great game. He has the speed back there that the Bruins have been missing. Churchwell will be ok at the other safety. Anderson played but didn't start.
The defense is better than the offense, which is weird for a Kelly team. Coastal only had a few big plays. McCall had one of the worst games in his career with 2 picks and a lost fumble.
Coastal was able to get pressure on the QBs, especially in the first half, but 90% of it came against the left tackle Fina who was making his first start. Khounta came in at LT and looked good. Fina seemed to settle down in the 2nd half. SDSU has a pretty good RE so it'll be a good test for Fina and Khounta.
Sturdivant is a deep threat that the Bruins haven't had from a real WR in a long time. Kaz Allen was fast but was more of a part-time WR. Ford is very good. I'm not sure how a CB is going to win any 50/50 balls vs Ford. Carlson had a TD at TE but the Bruins main targets were WRs, which is new.
Harden and Steele were both good, as expected. It's only one game but Moore looks like QB1. Garbers had some nice throws. He seems like a Drew Olson/Corey Paus level QB. If the Bruins decide to go with Moore, I'd rather have Schlee as the backup because he's a running threat - a different type of QB.
Beating the chandeliers is a great moment in ucla herstory.
