It's a roll of the dice for sure for Oregon. But this late in the game, it's that or Kiffin/Kelly/Wilcox. Ugh. I believe Oklahoma was deciding between him and Venables. Those other 3 likely never sniffed an interview.
At this point with early signing period in only a few days, I'll take the door Carol Merrill is standing behind and hope it's not a zonk....
If it was true he wanted the job ... I would have gone with Kiffin...proven track record. Build very good teams quickly...can recruit his ass off has organzied and hired good assistants. His teams play aggressive D and have really good offenses and he sure the hell would have got a QB that can throw and run...and if you wanted someone different...Lane would have been your man...he gets under his opponent coaches skin..and most importantly has won in the SEC as a HC....anyone who can handle that presure sure the heck could handle the presure in the PAC. and has successfully recruited the west and the south....not many can say they have done as well..
all right, I've heard of him, that's a bout it. But I'm kind of a college football nerd.
Yes the south has a long tradition of growing great defensive linemen. They sure look the part.
So when I tuned in last saturday, I expected a stout defense show mighty Alabama who was all that in the SEC.
Well, you saw the game. PRISON RAPING 101.
So who is the Lanning guy? OH he must be a seasoned long standing coach that has produced dominant defenses in the SEC. Was he on Bellechick's staff for a few years?
He's 34? Uh. so no rolodex. Uh, so what do we know about him. Was he a great all american in college? was his NFL career cut short by injury?
OH, he matriculated from William Jewel college? That sounds like one of four Cupcakes that Alabama always finds a way to get on their schedule. ALL AT HOME OF COURSE.
well he spent some time as an Alabama grad assistant and a high school special teams coach, and of course we all know how famous ETCU is for well, strippers and fixing basketball games, and well , a good place to fine a trophy wife. Then he went to memphis and then was a grad assistant again , and then , well you get the point.
then he wound up as georgia and their dc left so he was promoted , and well won all kinds of, oh wait, he didn't win anything. And then earlier this year KanSas where he hope to land a head coach gig, , you know that football powerhouse , storied program, and not really a basketball school, went another direction for their next head coach.
So exactly how is this an earth shattering Home Run Hire? I guess the scruffy look is good enough for a big contract these days.
scratching my head. wonder who his agent is. could this be behind all these moves that don't seem to make any logical sense? sc
Yup. Trying to figure out how this hire is “swinging for the fences.” Seems more like a barely calculated gamble to me, and as it stands now it’s one of stranger hires from a P5 school who has won and has a good program.
it could turn out great but at the time of the hire Id say it’s speculative. highly speculative. Kudos I guess for thinking out of the box.
very risky hire by the Ducks. an SEC guy with a lot of question marks. Wilcox or Chip would have made more sense. But the fans expectations were way above Chip and Wilcox.a letdown from what the Ducks were talking about, Urban, Kiffin, Aranda, So was Kiffin really begging for the job and Oregon told him to fuck off for Lanning.? you never know with coaching hires but this one is underwhelming for many many reasons. bet he was cheap tho.
Bruins not exactly giddy about the end result as Aranda was packed and waiting for the call from weirdwood. there are no winners here just broken dreams.
@LA Duck WTF are you talking about? It’s a complete 180° culture wise. The guy wasn’t even the DC, Kirby was, he’s just an asst with a title. Never been a HC.
Now it might turn out well, but it’s a very odd and uninspiring hire. Its a hire a Sun Belt school would make, not a program that is trying to take the leap to the elite level.
LOL! You're a wise man sometimes, sc.

Bohn still has the hire of the off season.
