You can't make irony like this up.
One year ago almost to the day (9/12/21) Clay Helton loses to double digit underdog Stanford 42-28 at home.
Clay is shown the tarmac two days later. Think they even drove him to the airport to fire him there in best USC tradition. lol it culminates several years of Clay being on the hot seat.
Clay Helton goes to coach a nobody team in the south. A former D2 power.
One year almost to the day later
Also in the second weekend of the year. USC plays Stanford AGAIN. USC beats Stanford 41-28 on the road.
Clay Helton goes into Nebraska as a big underdog coaching his new team. he faces and beats the fables cornhusker program Also in the second week of the season. Also on the road
One year exactly later? Clay Helton delivers the tarmac to Scott Frost. Another hot seat coach at a big time program. Clay is the grim reaper for Nebraska football. or their liberator. Fired after a terrible home loss? he does the same to Frost who is fired after a terrible home loss on week two.
The tie in? Scott Frost was a former Stanford QB. Clay is a former USC coach
Stanford beats USC, Clay fired. USC beats Stanford by almost identical score almost exactly a year later and at the same time a time zone over former USC coach Clay beats the former Stanford QB and he is fired.
On a more serious note. People? No matter how bad things get? This is a great example of how much life can change in a year. Or less. You despondent over your program or your life? Life has a funny way of either smacking the mighty in the face or giving you another chance. Don't let it get you too up or down as a fan or as a person because rash decisions or extreme actions can have permanent consequences. Thereby negating the wonderful opportunities that this circle presents to us. Or to put it in words Trojans can understand. At the base of Tommy there lies an inscription. "Upon these meditative steps of joy, shall rise again the destined reign of Troy"
Java I always thought Helton was a good but not great coach . He wasn’t going to win us an NC but not embarrass us either. Believe me I for one am happy to see him doing well.
but am more than happy Riley is our coach. I don’t understand those who want to see Clay Helton fail At Georgia Southern. I always hope the best for USC players who end up playing elsewhere, I e Slovis and Daniels.
great post, being serious!
