I think the most accurate read on Chip Kelly has been, from early on, that he's a special offensive coordinator & a poor Chieftain. Kelly had four spectacular years at Oregon when he took over the warship that was Rich Brooks' and Mike Bellotti's FB program. He left before he had to rearm it but did manage one minor recruiting scandal—when he paid someone else to help get players—before leaving. Following one solid season in the NFL he flamed out in spectacular fashion. His teams lost and many of his players didn't like him. He left the NFL with a damaged reputation. Chip's personality type and general indifference to every aspect of the job that doesn't take place in a dark room w/the projector on make him a mediocre chief. His awkward personality didn't command the respect of professionals, while at the college level, (where the players like him), he's disliked by the donors & power players that he's expected to charm & dominate. The fans have zero connection to him b/c he makes himself someone they cannot connect with. On top of that, and most importantly, he's not interested in recruiting HS athletes. Chip has done a poor job of it when the program needed someone to do a great job of it. Had the transfer portal not become a thing Chip would have been lost at UCLA. He's not a bad person or a bad football coach, he's just not built to be the Big Chief. It's about to get really ugly between UCLA and its fans. If the school doesn't want to compete at FB, it should say so and let people get on with their lives.

I think the notion of Chip being a top-notch OC has also been exposed as being bullshit. He's still getting credit for The Blur, which he probably should. But he hasn't created much of an offense at UCLA, and nothing with any consistency.

DTR, Bobo, and Charbonnet, along with a few transfer portal OL, made him look good at times. Deshaun Foster coaching up the RBs made him look good at times. But his offense in '23 was absolute horseshit, and it proved he has his head up his ass.

Yes, Mark, Chip Kelly is a bad football coach.

I'm obviously biased as I only know Chip as a damned good offensive genius. And one who basically put Oregon on the map of college football. Hard for us quacks to imagine him failing so much.

It's sort of like knowing Yasmine before Baywatch and after.

My mind just can't grasp the current situation....

I agree with what you're saying and this year in particular the offense has been pathetic but his first five years manufacturing points wasn't the real weakness they scored plenty.

As you know the defense could never get off the field and gave up way too many PPG. Chip was a idiot for bringing in his buddy Azzinaro to be the DC, and when he failed to fire him after the third year you knew Ucla made a bad hire.

He just waited too long before bringing in McGovern who may have turned out alright had he not gotten sick.

Now in year six they have a good one in Lynn but unfortunately like you said the O is horseshit in 23. What's sickening is they only score 7 in the loss to a garbage ASU team at the Rose Bowl, go to the Coli and blowout SC, come back home and again only score 7 and lose to a 5-6 Cal team. That right there is enough to show him the door.
