You moved the ball to the 38 yard line with six seconds left.
you need 3 to tie and put the game into overtime.
that's a 55 yard field goal.
you are at home. wind isn't an issue. it's not raining.
your kicker missed a 50 yard attempt at the end of the first half. didn't see it.
Your quarterback is playing hurt.
He throws it incomplete to leave one second on the clock.
Do you really think your odds at a hail marry are better than trying another field goal to force overtime?
Lets say your regular kicker just can't kick it that far, you have two backup portal guys that I am sure at least one of them can. These guys stand around practice and kick field goals every single day. Unlike SC you actually have a special teams coach. at home. perfect conditions? what am I missing here?
TEE has it basically correct. Oregon does not have a kicker who can hit beyond about 45 yards. Been that way for many years now. Not sure why?
Hail Mary was the correct call here.
That said, it was certainly a game full of learning for Lanning. Hopefully he'll improve based on this loss. Already even as a first-timer he runs circles as a game-day coach around the last guy who ran the show in Eugene.
Where TEE has it wrong is that, yes, the season is a disappointment from a playoff perspective. But in August had you said Oregon would rise at one point to #6 in the CFP under a brand new coach/OC/DC/QB, I'd have taken it and not looked back. The season is definitely NOT over, though.
If Bo can play the next two games, a p12 championship and Rose Bowl berth is still in the cards....win out and we are in. If Bo does not play, Ducks lose their last 2 games.
Good news is I'm not at all worried about QB talent going forward. Who wouldn't want to play in the #2 offense in the nation, just behind #1 Tennessee and ahead of Georgia?
Got a ton of work to do in the secondary though....hopefully a top 10 recruiting class for 2023 will be helpful here...
The "halo Mary" also has a pass interference potential in Eugene. But I agree try thr field goal, U Dub can be off sides on a miss. You have Pac 10 official anything is possible. Give luck a chance.
Oregon did not have a kicker who could even remotely make a 50
yard field goal yet alone a 55 yarder. 1-10 on a Hail Mary is better than a zero chance of making a 55 yarder. Maybe at altitude but I don’t think Eugene is a mile high.
I concur. My guess is Lanning had no faith in the kicker. then Bo short arms a pass. Read my other post. It was a cluster F all around the whole game. Ducks did everything they could to lose this game at the end.
Ducks losing their starting Center first series hurt the Offense.
but UW passed at will the whole game with no pressure and horrible DB play.
all around disaster and season over.
if Bo is out the rest of the year. Ducks lose their next two easily.
Dante Moore is your starter next year unless he flips to MSU.
Wasn't there some sort of penalty against Oregon that moved the ball back toward midfield, after they'd reached the 38? Was it a taunting penalty, or something like that?
