Bob Toledo and Homer Smith running the offense in the 80s and 90s made me very nervous every November. Toledo's success as HC was tied entirely to Cade McNown's incredible run in 97-98. And it all unraveled suddenly after a 6-0 start in 2001.
Yep. All because of that fucking SUV -- something which never affected Joe McKnight, by the way. Of course, PausGate didn't help, coupled with the fact that Toledo had pretty much lost the team. After Stanford beat them in the Bruins' first loss, apparently LB Ryan Nece asked Toledo "what's left to play for?", since they were out of the national title picture. That right there was a sign that the end was near.
Why Toledo wasn't fired after that 27-0 loss to USC, the Bruins' fourth loss in a row, the world will never know. The following week, after the Bruins beat ASU for their final win of the year, Toledo actually had the balls to give the game ball to A.D. Pete Dallis, instead of giving it to the seldom-used back-up QB, Scott McEwan, who threw 3 TD passes and led the team to victory. I practically blew a gasket when I read that in the paper the next day. "Please, Pete, don't fire me! You still love me, right?" As if an outgoing A.D. was really going to fire him? Sickening. And then the Bruins choose to not even play in a bowl game. Bad fucking form.
The 2002 season that followed was a complete waste of time since the new A.D., Guerrero, apparently made no effort to seek a new coach who knew his ass from a hole in the ground. The rest is history. The first three years of Jim Mora were encouraging, but that blew up, as you know. Chip has obviously been a disaster. Maybe the next coach will finally have a clue. We'll see if Jarmond is worth his salt, that's for sure.
Ahh, don’t you have to win a NC to be a power again. that’s what I was told
All it takes for SC to get to the top of the mountain is a good hire.
It’s always been that way.
USC QB recruit passes Manning for #1 spot.
You guys just went 4-8, what are you talking about?
one of my favorite SC ‘backers. Btw, when I was at SC in the 80’s there was a player driving a sweet 240z with the plates,
“SC Backer”. Anyone recall seeing that car around ? I heard his parents bought it for him.
