...that will be 1/2 of the friggin' Pac 12! Which begs the question -- why add these teams in the first place?? Why not just leave the conferences as they were????
Well, I guess the answer is because the Pac 12 couldn't take care of itself, meaning the university presidents/chancellors, the athletic departments, and especially the stupid Pac 12 Conference suits and the Pac 12 Network executives. Larry Scott is the gift that just keeps on giving. What a colossal fuck-up.
College football is going to be just like the NFL -- where a few teams have a chance to make the Stupor Bowel, but most of the teams either just sit in the middle and suck on it, or they become the bottom-feeders where no one gives a shit.
I never thought I'd see the day when the sport of college football completely shit the bed, but it's upon us.
And it's ALL because of the boob tube.
It's a combination of forces first driven by media profits
now given the opportunity through its media payout model
the B1G has decided it will become the most financially powerful conference
the long-term effects are unclear other than P5 just became the P2
and if you're not in the P2, you are no longer relevant in the long term
College football is already like the NFL....only arguably worse from the standpoint of always the same teams playing for a championship the past 25 years or so. Va Tech, Oregon and TCU are the only non-blue bloods who have made the national championship game since the BCS began in 1998.
Alabama
Georgia
tOSU
LSU
Clemson
FSU
Auburn
ND
Texas
Florida
USC
Oklahoma
Miami
Nebraska
Tennessee
That makes 15 blue bloods plus 3 non-blue bloods in 50 total championship berths since 1998. That's out of how many Div 1a teams? 114+? It's worse than the NFL in that sense.
Me, in general I'm good with change. It's definitely helped Oregon rise from obscurity. When I was at Oregon we had exactly 3 games in 4 seasons broadcast nationally. Not one for the "good ol' days" which usually weren't all that good, much like our memories of those years.
BTW saw your post about Oppenheimer, Waldo. Did you know that Nolan didn't use ADR? Just saw that as one explanation for the crazy audio levels. (And I know you know what ADR is!) Haven't seen the film, but that doesn't completely explain the mix issues, I wouldn't think? Unless he's riding the audio to mask the ambient noises he couldn't EQ his way out of....

Everyone (except the presidents) saw Larry Scott was screwing the confernce up 10 years ago. GK was delt a bad hand but if almost half of the Pac-8/10/12/10/9/0 is worthy of a B1G invite and almost half of the Pac-8/10/12/10/9/0 is worthy of a BIG XII invite, why couldn't he have gotten a good media deal done a year ago?
Great post. Every point spot on. I got off the phone earlier this afternoon with a very smart cfb guy who was affiliated with the Cal football team several years ago. He basically stated exactly what you said in your post.
Networks changed MLB (not for the better), and now it's going to do the exact same thing to cfb. The network nerds who never participated in a sport will be calling the shots now. Think about that for a minute. Everything based on stats and numbers.... and 💰
Concur.
boob tube and money. Basketball is a total joke at one and done.
A 16 team playoffs is good though. It eliminates all the opt outs in the bowl games. Once they go to a 16 team playoff, just get rid of the bowl games. They're meaningless. Get rid of the participation trophy.
The RB with 4th place teams. Paleese.
