Agreed. Dabo was just a former position coach until he got a good DC to handle that side of the ball. This year is completely on CLR for holding onto Grinch but I think we should see how the DC hire turns out before casting full judgment.

CLR has often stated he showed up to an empty cupboard and it would take a while to build a program. Said it again after the ucla game.

Of course a team has to have a certain level of toughness and physicality to win championships. That's a given. I don't know how much or how little tackling they do in practice but most teams back off during the season and our tackling was actually improved from last year over the first few games but fell off a cliff starting with the Arizona State game. The issue even from Game 1 though was scheme. When your players are taking bad angles or nowhere near the ballcarrier, they're going to be at huge disadvantage even before they make contact but at least early on when they did, they wrapped up better. But all too often the LB's were crashing into the backs of the DL while the running back sidestepped the opposite way for daylight. No clue what was going on.

That having been said, I think LR's biggest mistake with Grinch was giving him too much reign over the defense, as well as drills and personnel. Based on an article/interview that took place after the UCLA game, I think he's learned some valuable lessons from this past season and will hopefully not make the same mistakes going forward.

normalize defensive stats to plays and drives such as yards per play, big plays per drive, etc.

realize a team gets about eight drives per game on without turnovers, you know two per quarter

now when your offense turns the ball over twice this year, unlike last year

all the above numbers are increased by 25% per game

that would mask most improvements on defense

and negate any two stops per game your defense does get

such as a three and out or an interception
