simplistic view by someone that really doesn't understand what the Grinch is doing
I have yet to see anyone accurately describe SC's scheme which looks a lot like Georgia's, bama's, Baltimore's, Michigan's and many other teams [yes there is a Harbaugh connection]
in short, a solid and well accepted scheme
everyone is striving for a 'speed' [athletic] D
and size, and length, and physicality, and DEPTH.
Georgia, bama, Michigan, Ahia St, and the Ravens have elite depth
to go with elite speed, size, length, and physicality. SC not so much.
the fact is that if SC is missing tackles then the scheme is putting players in a position to make the play
and they don't
I think SC should play more zone coverage then they do
zone coverage is a key strategy towards stopping the run and slowing explosive plays
it also allows players to keep an eye on draw plays, especially delayed ones
and on the quarterback, especially mobile ones
I also would like to see more corner blitzes
I would also like to see the secondary to make better use of inside leverage
to combat the easier throws on the hash marks and in
especially when the dline is getting pressure or if there is a blitz dialed up
these are really scheme's but tactics within the scheme
the numbers don't lie and they say SC is getting pressure when they only rush four
and that is very different and a big improvement from last year
well, players in position but wiffing on tackles goes back to hitting bags instead of live players in practice. Bags don't juke, so the error in their ways is obvious. You learn to play football by playing football. QED.
Grinch needs to dial back on the aggression. His stunts and twists are actually congesting the field and he's tipping his blitzes way too soon in an all or nothing fashion, losing gap control in the process.
Agree!! Tipping his blitzes is just arrogance and his schemes seem to purposely clog the middle and then coupled with zero containment leads to a ton of big plays.
If Grinch has D sets where every LB/DB is manned up on someone and you can drag MLB or Bullock out of position, like what happened on CU's QB draw for a TD, your scheme is FLAWED. full stop. you are DOA with that approach. How Grinch got to his position/reputation with such a naive approach to defense is beyond me, but you only can fire him, simplify the D and move on. Should have happened after Tulane, But Riley fucked up.

they need to do better on third and fourth downs
and they need to cut explosives in half
just like Arizona played the Huskies this weekend
