Many years ago Ed O told me that a verbal commitment meant “hold that scholarship for me coach while I look around”

Now it seems like that’s even the case when they’re on campus.

I have no idea how these guys run a program today. All this team hoping is pretty common when kids get to be mid teens in travel baseball and that’s one reason I got out. I want to know who I’m coaching. Not find out one day my 1b wants to go play for Troy Percival

This is why I never had any respect for Mater Dei even though most of my friends growing up went there.

Mater Dei has always been what college football has turned into. Kids come and go as they please . No loyalty. It's a catholic school. It should have catholic kids on their sports teams. But they pick and choose heathens from all over who's family's don't even have to pay tuition, and kick the snot out of regular high schools made out of kids that can walk or ride their bikes to their own freaking high school.

just curious, what did you do when a 13 year old from a rival travel team's parent contacted you because they thought your team might be better for their kid. say the kid was best at short, but the kid on his travel team was an obvious prospect, and yours wasn't that good? sc

That's one of the problems when a coach is faced with a kid he thinks has REAL talent. As good as the coach may be, and as much money as he's being paid, he's really not in charge until the kid signs on the dotted line. And then...maybe.

So, it's easy to say that a coach should tell a recruit, "Look, if you want to look at other schools, that's fine. Just don't commit to my program at this time. Take your trips, and when you're ready to make a commitment to us, we'll take it. And we'll honor it. But if you make a verbal commitment to my program, and then you take other trips, we're going to have to move on. You're the number one player at your position, and we'd be thrilled to have you. But if you're telling me you're looking at other programs while also telling me you're coming here, I'm going to have to make other plans for your position. I have a program to run and a commitment to this university to field the best team possible. You can help me do that, but you're going to have to be straight with me if you really want to play here."

The kid then bails. And the coach is left looking like an idiot for "letting" the kid get away, when in fact he was doing the right thing.

The whole system is fucked.
